I wrote this song in mid-March, just as the US started employing lockdowns to combat the novel coronavirus. I had meant to do a little music video with it, and that’s still to come, but this song feels more relevant today than it did at most points in the last couple months, with the riots we’ve been experiencing and the levels of anxiety we’re exhibiting as a society.
Here are the lyrics…
‘Anybody Else Going Crazy?’ – by Cecil Charles
VERSE 1
one by one they’re shutting down
the lights in all the little towns
at 10 tonight – you heard me right.
We’ve played this game a time before
but few in living memory
know what’s in store, or how much more…
PRECHORUS
Can we learn?
setting down the torches
‘fore the whole world burns?
CHORUS
Is anybody else going crazy?
no, you’re not alone – splitting at the seams
Is anybody else going crazy?
oh, we put our faith in paper dreams
so hold me close wherever this thing goes –
you’re the only thing keeping me sane
just, so you know…
VERSE 2
‘Two by two’ told to remain –
here next to you until it’s safe
outside again…
let’s look within.
It’s funny how our way of life
was perched atop some places
that we knew weren’t right –
we hold so tight…
PRECHORUS
Can we learn?
setting down the torches
‘fore the whole world burns?
CHORUS
Is anybody else going crazy?
no, you’re not alone
splitting at the seams
Is anybody else going crazy?
oh, we put our faith in paper dreams –
so hold me close wherever this thing goes
you’re the only thing keeping me sane
just, so you know…
So, please… be good to your neighbor. In the end, that’s what all of this is about. Choose your words carefully, show love when you can, stand on the side of truth and humility and vulnerability, and know that you can make a difference in improving our world (and in keeping it from divulging into chaos). Thank you so much for your support… and please share this song if you think it might resonate with others. ~ Cecil
