“Don’t Follow Me Down” – Official Release

“Don’t Follow Me Down” is here – now streaming on all platforms (Spotify / Apple Music / Google Play, YouTube and more).

This song is about the struggle between shedding that which keeps you from your dreams, but being drawn to those things despite it all. Had so much fun making this one with my producer, Dominic Gibbs, in Nashville.

We both got into the headspace of “let’s make a dusty desert vibe,” and I think that came through in the end – dark and moody and determined.

The lyrics were also some of my favorite to write (included below).

“Well I run away. Away, away, away, away, away. Because I cannot stay… away…”

~ Cecil Charles

I realized with the opening line that playing with the repeat of a single word, only to throw a different word at the end and change the entire scope of the phrase… well, that could be fun.

But tricks aside, this song is about determination and knowing what you want (and what’s holding you back), and the eternal struggle between those two things.

Really hope you enjoy, my friends. Please consider sharing this song with friends you think may like it. It’s been an incredible year so far, and I can’t wait to share a few more songs before we enter 2020.

Thank you to all my fans, family, and friends – and to my Patreon Patrons whose monthly small-dollar pledges are keeping me writing and touring and releasing new music.

“Don’t Follow Me Down”

~ Cecil Charles

VERSE 1

Well I run away… away, away, away, away, away.

Because I cannot stay… away, away, away, away, away.

CHORUS

So don’t you follow me down.

I’m on the wrong side of town..

..and I ain’t turning around.

I have yet to be found,

please don’t fall for me now.

VERSE 2

Well I hope you see

this way, this way, this wayward way we came.

Is it just destiny

to pay and pay? But painful is this game.

CHORUS

VERSE 3

Well I’m back again…

again, again, again, against my will.

’cause there’s this piece in me

that sees and sees, then ceases to be filled.

CHORUS
