Been in Nashville just over two years now. Man, what a town. There’s so much talent here and I just hope that I’ve been a decent sponge – because now it’s time to take some of my songs into the studio.
Thankfully I was introduced to Dominic “Dom” Gibbs through some of the great contacts I made working on the “Shadows” film.
Had a good phone call today with Dom. He and his wife moved to Nashville a couple years ago from Michigan.
What struck me immediately was his authentic interest in the songs I’ve written and posted on SoundCloud.
All of what he heard were sketches – songs that I’d thought out (chords / lyrics / melodies / harmonies), but which didn’t include any real percussion or bass. I recorded these song sketches unabashedly on my iPhone’s Garage Band app and… yes… through the earbud microphone that comes standard with the iPhone.
Low tech, I know, but GarageBand on the iPhone is perhaps my favorite songwriting tool. Interested in how I use GarageBand for songwriting? Check out my blog post on the subject.
OK – back to what got me stoked: Dom seemed to get my songs. And, having listened to his music, I was a fan of his as well.
He and his wife have a pop project called TENNIES. And while it’s very different in orchestration from what I’ve done previously, there’s a real dedication to the songwriting, the hooks, and picking unusual and lovely melodies that are at the same time perfectly pop and catchy as hell.
Long story short – I’m ready to work with him, and see how at goes for at least one song’s worth of time.
We’re gonna each pick our three favorites from my song repertoire and reconvene next week.
